THE EXHIBITION

Willer is delighted to announce the opening of their new exhibition – a show of 3 collections of candleholders. The artist’s and designer’s, some well known, others anonymous. Their approaches to sculptural form, metal as a medium, and the domestic and decorative function of the object are reflected in each group. The use of cast bronze, hammered surfaces, moulded brass, a range of patinations and, in some, recurring elements, combine to give each candleholder its own unique presence.  Pieces that both successfully stand on their own, and also speak to each other across cultures and time in their domestic surroundings.

The ‘mix’ is an important part of the Willer gallery’s approach to makers and their creations. This exhibition embodies and illustrates that perspective, one adopted by gallery owner Rebecca Willer throughout her life and career. Click to view Sotheby’s article Rebecca Willer, A Life in Collecting.

THE ARTISTS

MATT MITCHELL

A former sculptor and graduate of Saint Martin’s School of Art. Matt Mitchell has been dealing in original 20th Century design for over fifteen years.

Willer have collaborated with him by curating a unique collection of 20th Century Brutalist candle holders.

Many are monumental and for Matt, as for Willer, “the fascination lies in the conviction to fulfil an everyday function, such as that of a candle holder, with a strong sculptural form”. Typically, from the post-war years and later, “all of these pieces have been realised in high quality materials, with creativity and style. I like the permanence of bronze in particular, which wears beautifully – and I like the statement of identity and individuality.”

LYNN CHADWICK

Lynn Chadwick is one of the preeminent British sculptors of the 20th Century, with an international reputation underpinned by major prizes, important commissions, and a lifetime of private and public exhibitions.

The  complete series of limited edition bronze candleabras created by the artist over the course of his career, is exclusively represented by and exhibited at Willer.

TED MUEHLING

Ted Muehling has been designing decorative objects and jewellery inspired by organic natural forms since studying industrial design at Pratt. The pieces are realised at his studio in New York and also in collaboration with notable manufacturers such as Nymphenburg (porcelain) and E.R. Butler (bronze and silver).

The precision, delicacy, and purity of his work has been influential and has gained him many prizes. His work is included in numerous public and private collections.

Willer exclusively represent the Ted Muehling candlestick collections in the UK.
